Frequently Asked Questions

The following information may help you avoid getting a parking citation and may answer some of the questions you have about parking at CNU:

Back to Top I just received a parking ticket that I feel was unjustly given, what should I do?
The University provides a structured means to appeal citations. Forms and complete information are available at the Parking Services Office. Individual appeals to members of the parking staff will not be entertained.

Back to Top What are some reasons that probably will not be looked upon favorably during the appeals process:

  • I didn't know I wasn't supposed to park there.
  • I was only there for a few minutes.
  • I have parked in that spot for the last few years.
  • I was late for class.
  • The person in the parking lot told me I could park there.
  • I don't think its fair.
  • There was no fire so I parked in the fire lane.
  • I had to go to the bathroom really bad.
  • There was no sign saying I can't park there.
  • Someone else was driving my vehicle.
  • There weren't any parking spots available.
  • The weather was bad and I didn't want to walk.
  • I usually park off campus.
  • I didn't have time or the money to get a decal.

Back to Top I'm trying to register for classes and I have a hold on my records for outstanding parking citations, what should I do?
The outstanding fines will need to be resolved before the hold can be removed. Contact Parking Services at (757) 594-7129 for additional information.

Back to Top What forms of payment does Parking Services accept?
Cash, check, money order and FLEX points.

Back to Top If I turn on my hazard lights or leave a note detailing my reason for being parked in a particular location, will I still receive a parking citation?
Yes. If you are parked illegally with or without flashers, you will receive a parking citation. You will also receive a citation even if you leave a note when the vehicle is parked appropriately but without a decal. Enforcement officers do not recognize notes as valid parking decals.

Back to Top If I am a visitor to CNU, do I need to display a parking decal?
Yes, all vehicles parked on campus MUST display a valid parking decal at all times. Parking Services will provide visitors with parking passes at no charge during our normal business hours (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm). Visitors may also obtain a temporary pass from the University police located on Shoe Lane (everyday 24 hours a day).

Back to Top I'm having a visitor come to campus, can I get a temporary parking pass for them?
No, the actual visitor must come to Parking Services to get the temp pass.

Back to Top Who sets the prices for decals and fines?
All University fees and fines are set by the Board of Visitors.

Back to Top I am not sure if this lot is designated for my decal, what should I do?
In the absence of a sign at the entrance to a parking area, refer to the map to determine parking regulations for that area. Any modifications to a parking area during the academic year will be posted on signs at the entrance to the lot and the change will be effective immediately. Please report any tampering of signs to the Parking Services Office.

Back to Top My parking decal has been lost or stolen, what should I do?
If your decal has been stolen contact Campus Police immediately. A police report will need to be completed before you will receive your replacement decal. Filing a false police report will result in disciplinary action. For lost decals, contact Parking Services to receive your new decal. There is a replacement fee of $20.

Back to Top If I choose not to adhere to the decal placement policy, am I in violation of the CNU Parking Regulations?
Yes, you may be fined for improper display if your decal is not correctly displayed on your vehicle.

Back to Top I'm driving a different car that doesn't have my decal can I park on campus?
Yes, you can receive a temporary parking pass from Parking Services that will allow you to park in your regular designated spots for no charge. You must bring a valid ID.

Back to Top Do I need a CNU parking decal if I have handicap plates or a handicap parking pass?

Back to Top I have a need for a temporary handicap pass due to injury, surgery, etc.) can I get a handicap pass from Parking Services?
No all handicap passes are available from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Back to Top Where does all the money go and what is it used for?

This includes but is not limited to: construction of new parking areas, maintenance of existing parking areas, enforcement, lighting, installation and maintenance of help boxes, etc.
